A showcase of my recent photography

Photography

It has been quite a long time since I’ve posted on my blog! So many eventful things have happened in my life since last July, most notably my legal name change in October. There are simply too many exciting things to talk about, that they cannot not fit in one post!

Back in January, I decided to purchase a new camera. I opted to purchase a Canon EOS R8, since I knew I wanted a full-frame sensor, and the R8 offers great value for a full-frame camera. The small body also makes it great for vlogging, although I’ve yet to delve into that. The main downside is the small battery, but that’s nothing that a spare battery (and possibly a third-party battery grip) can’t solve; so far, I haven’t found the battery life limiting for my purposes, but I do expect it to become an issue when I decide to shoot video.

In addition to the R8 body and the kit lens (the RF 24-50mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM), I also purchased a RF 50mm F1.8 STM lens. At only $200, this “nifty fifty” offers wonderful low-light performance, despite its lack of image stabilization (compounded by the R8’s lack of IBIS). In my experience, the lack of stabilization is nothing that can’t be solved by using faster shutter speeds and holding your camera correctly. In fact, most of (if not all) of these photos were taken using the RF 50mm F1.8 STM lens; it just looks that much better than the kit lens.

Enjoy the photos!

A church is seen behind a stop sign with a one way sign on top. The arrow on the one way sign points to a Christian cross atop the church.

No religious message intended, but I did go to church (not this one) for the first time in years at the end of January and beginning of February. The foreground blur is intended to emphasize the church and the cross on top.

Three retail stores are seen behind a parking lot. The clothing store in the middle is Sydney's favorite, White House Black Market!

Aritzia store at night. There are multiple lightbulbs under the Aritzia sign.

And to finish things off, a view of the Tarrant County Courthouse looking north along Main Street from the Sundance Square Plaza!

Needless to say, I’ve been very impressed with the quality and performance of the R8 body, especially when using the RF 50mm F1.8 STM lens. It has greatly exceeded my expectations in every way imaginable.

PS: If you’d like to take a look at the equipment I was using up until recently, I’ll link to that post for comparison purposes. My R8 also has an articulated screen, so I can still use it for self-portraits!
